Proof of identity
Proof of your identity is about fighting against money laundering, financial crime and terrorism. All lawyers and many others who provide financial services are obligated to obtain proof of their clients identity. Indeed we are prevented from acting if this is not done. So it is essential that we establish proof of who you are, at the start.
· Why showing us some ID is a good thing?
· What we need to know
· Whether you’re a new or existing client, we are required to verify your identity when we act for you.
· Why we need this?
We have to check the identity of all our customers to comply with money laundering and ‘proceeds of crime’ regulations. These regulations aim to stop criminals using banking, financial and legal services to launder money. They also protect you from criminals who might try to use your name without you knowing. Criminals often use false names and addresses to hide their identity, making it difficult for the authorities to trace ‘dirty’ money. By giving us your details, you’re helping us stop them.
Proving information about who you are is easy
We shall carry out an electronic check but as we shall often not meet with clients due to their busy schedules and instead transact cases by mail and telephone we shall also ask for this information our Starter Pack which is sent to you at the outset:
· Your name
· Your address
· Your date of birth
· Nationality
· Country of residence
· Where any money will come from – for example the sale of another property, mortgage, savings etc and will ask for proof if the money is saved or comes from third party.
